Construction 101 Curriculum

Ten weeks of construction foundations training.

The curriculum progresses from orientation and safety culture through construction math, tools, rigging, lifting equipment, fall protection, professionalism, business and jobsite administration, and a two-part OSHA 10 class.

10 Weeks 1 Night per Week 4 Hours per Day 42 Total Hours
01 Orientation, Safety Culture & PPE Attendance and grading, fit for duty, physical and mental readiness, substance policy, fatigue, PPE, construction clothing, heat stress, and hydration.
  • Attendance and grading expectations, including the stated three-absence allowance and 70% attendance requirement for class completion.
  • Fit-for-duty expectations covering physical demands, mental alertness, professional emotional control, and safe readiness for training and jobsites.
  • Zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy overview, fatigue and impairment risks, and drug-testing expectations described in the curriculum.
  • Required PPE, proper construction clothing, heat-stress awareness, and hydration.
02 Construction Math, Measurement & Tool Safety Fractions, construction math, tape-measure use, knife safety, and proper extension-cord handling.
  • Construction fractions, decimal conversions, basic arithmetic, reduction of fractions, and practical measurement problems.
  • Tape-measure parts, feet, inches, fractions, inside and outside measurements, and accurate recording.
  • Construction knife types, hazards, handling, cutting techniques, safe storage, and material cutting.
  • The over-under method for rolling extension cords to reduce damage, tangling, and trip hazards.
03 Power Tools & Caulking Power-tool safety and use, electrical awareness, inspection, work zones, lock-out/tag-out awareness, and caulking fundamentals.
  • Identification, inspection, safe operation, tool and accessory selection, electrical safety, and required PPE.
  • Stable body positioning, guards, safe work zones, material securing, cord management, blade or bit changes, and malfunction response.
  • Caulking-gun setup, tube preparation, trigger control, consistent bead application, smoothing, sealant selection, inspection, cleanup, and storage.
04 Rigging Fundamentals Rigging principles, load control, center of gravity, sling angles, equipment inspection, working load limits, hitch configurations, and hand signals.
  • Load weight, center of gravity, load charts, sling-angle effects, shock loading, pinch points, balance, and communication.
  • Nylon, wire-rope, and chain slings; shackles; hooks; spreader bars; load-rating tags; and Working Load Limits.
  • Inspection and removal-from-service awareness for damaged rigging equipment.
  • Common hand signals including hoist, lower, swing, stop, emergency stop, boom up/down, and extend/retract.
05 Lifting Equipment, Forklifts & Maintenance Forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, stability, load limits, pedestrian awareness, pre-use inspections, and maintenance awareness.
  • Hazards associated with forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts, including overloading, tip-over risk, crush zones, and overhead hazards.
  • Daily pre-use inspections, fluid levels where applicable, tires, forks, guardrails, safety devices, visible damage, and reporting problems.
  • Practical awareness around moving equipment, elevated loads, fall protection on boom lifts, scissor-lift guardrails, and authorization requirements.
06 Fall Protection, Ladders & Scaffolding Fall hazards, ladder selection and setup, three points of contact, fall-protection systems, harness inspection, anchorage, and tie-off awareness.
  • Recognition of floor holes, openings, slippery surfaces, clutter, incomplete scaffolding, improper ladder use, and elevated-work hazards.
  • Step, extension, and platform ladders; inspection; setup; body positioning; three points of contact; duty ratings; and 4:1 angle awareness.
  • Guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety nets, full-body harnesses, lanyards, anchorage points, connectors, inspection, fitting, and rescue awareness.
07 Professionalism, Policy & Workforce Structure Sexual-harassment training, workplace professionalism, chain of command, trade options, union awareness, and union/non-union comparison.
  • Respectful workplace expectations, professional language, appropriate boundaries, and reporting awareness.
  • Construction chain of command: apprentice, journeyperson, foreman, general foreman when applicable, superintendent, and project manager.
  • Trade options including mechanical insulation, electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, ironwork, sheet metal, carpentry, and operating engineers.
  • Union and non-union employment structures, wages, benefits, apprenticeship, representation, grievance procedures, referrals, and career considerations.
08 Business, History & Jobsite Administration Construction history in Las Vegas, construction finance basics, and workplace schedules, breaks, lunches, and jobsite administration.
  • How skilled trades and construction shaped Las Vegas growth and how construction demand can rise and fall with economic conditions.
  • Hourly wages, overtime, double-time when applicable, union benefit packages, health insurance basics, pension and annuity contributions, tracking hours, and budgeting for slow periods or layoffs.
  • Start-time expectations, designated breaks, lunch policies, punctuality, professional conduct, and fit-for-duty expectations after lunch.
09 OSHA 10 Part 1 The first part of the two-part OSHA 10 class described in the program curriculum.
  • The curriculum states that certified OSHA instructors lead the two-part OSHA 10 class.
10 OSHA 10 Part 2 The second part of the two-part OSHA 10 class described in the program curriculum.
  • The curriculum describes the two-part class as equipping students with OSHA 10 certification and essential skills for entering the workforce safely and confidently.
